How Do I Fix My Bloating?
Gemma Stuart
Bloating isn’t something we should be dealing with daily. It’s a signal from your digestive system that it needs some TLC. Bloating is one of those gut signals that makes you feel physically uncomfortable, self-conscious if your clothes no longer fit and completely fed up at what to do next. Not fun is it?
Bloating can happen after you’ve eaten, later in the day, around your period, during stressful times or sometimes for no obvious reason at all - and that’s the bit that might need some attention, getting to the root cause.
And while bloating is very common, that does not mean it’s normal to have to put up with it if it’s impacting your daily life.
If it feels familiar that one minute your stomach feels “normal”, and the next you feel tight, swollen, gassy or like your clothes suddenly do not fit properly... then this article will help.
You probably know a bit of this already - bloating can happen for lots of reasons. Sometimes it’s caused by excess gas in your digestive system and there might be foods that trigger that in you. Sometimes it’s linked to constipation, food intolerances, eating too quickly, swallowing air, stress, hormonal changes or changes in your gut bacteria. So a lot to think about…
If bloating is occasional, it’s probably not much to worry about. But for other people, it can be a daily occurrence meaning feeling frustrated and confused. And it can affect what they wear, what they eat, their social life and their confidence.
Your gut is influenced by your diet, lifestyle, stress levels, hormones, sleep and routine - so the tricky thing is that bloating is not always about one single food or one simple trigger. So looking at the bigger picture, it can also be able “stacking” these things. So food on it’s own doesn’t trigger your bloat, but when you’re stressed your gut is on high alert then you add a rushed meal, then boom, you’re bloating.
This is about making some more conscious good gut choices, to give your digestive system a helping hand and setting it up for success… and less bloating and discomfort.
Sounds imply but the way our lives are designed currently, everything is in a rush. 10 minute meals, eating on the go, takeaways and rushing isn’t good for your gut.
Eating quickly can mean you swallow more air, which may make bloating and gas worse. An easy thing to focus on is sitting down for meals, chewing properly and giving your body time to digest. We talk about chewing your food until it liquidy in this bloating and constipation blog.
Fibre is so important for gut health but suddenly changing your diet and eating lots more fibre can sometimes increase bloating, especially if your gut is sensitive. You can build fibre up gradually and drink plenty of water alongside it. (Our Gut Wealth product also contain fibre to set your day off correctly!)
You’ve probably got a fair idea of foods that trigger your bloating, even if your tastebuds love them, your gut might be telling a different story.
Some common culprits of bloating are: fizzy drinks, very rich meals, large portions, onions, garlic, beans, wheat or certain artificial sweeteners can make bloating worse. You don’t need to cut everything at the same time, but keeping a simple food and symptom diary can help you spot patterns. (See our recommended food diary blog for more)
This might be a bold statement but this seems to be often an age thing - young people all seem to be chronically hydrated and older people just don’t drink enough water. Your pee should be clear and light in colour, if it’s not, you’re dehydrated. This doesn't just affect your urine, it’s also impacting your gut health.
Water helps support normal digestion and bowel habits. If you’re not drinking enough, things can slow down, which may contribute to that heavy, uncomfortable, bloated feeling. Hydrate - it’s a free thing you can do for yourself daily. Stop torturing your gut!
Gentle movement, even a walk after meals, can help support digestion and reduce trapped gas. We’re not suggesting an intense workout. Do as our mediterranean cousins do - head for a light walk after meals for blood flow to your digestive system.
Your gut and brain are closely connected - they’re in constant communication to each other. Stress can really affect digestion, bowel movements and your gut sensitivity - in various ways. If your bloating gets worse during busy or anxious periods, your nervous system may be sending you gut signals.
This can be a vicious cycle. Because when we’re stressed, we’re also more likely to reach for comfort foods or disrupt our good gut habits which then can lead to more bloating and discomfort.
Constipation is one of the most common causes of bloating. If you’re not going regularly, gas and stool can build up, leaving you feeling full, tight and uncomfortable. Supporting regularity through fluids, fibre, movement and a consistent routine can help.
But also if you’re experiencing bowel urgency or loose stools, bloating can coincide.
The Gut Wealth team work hard with our product and education to help you understand what’s going on.
Most bloating is not serious and nothing to worry about, but according to the NHS you should speak to a healthcare professional if your bloating is new, severe, persistent or comes with symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool, ongoing diarrhoea, vomiting, severe pain, or a major change in bowel habits.
It is always better to get checked if something feels different for you. And try to bring a note of how regular the symptoms are, and also take photos of you bloating if you think it will help guide the conversation.
