5 Things You Need To Know About Gut Health From a Gut Expert
Gemma Stuart
I’ve been thinking a lot about how we, the Gutsy team, can add value for you. I often bounce from feeling like I am still learning heaps, to feeling like I have connected the dots and have lots to share.
Over the last few years I’ve read the books.
Listened to the podcasts.
Sat in rooms with very clever experts. Very clever ones indeed!
And, most importantly, listened to you, our community.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that gut health is a lot messier, more human, and more nuanced than a tidy Instagram graphic from the green juicers of the world would suggest.
So here are five things I genuinely believe about gut health, shaped by science and real life.
Most people don’t have dodgy guts because they “do it wrong”. Your gut doesn’t need you to eat bland and uninspiring foods or give up joy forever. It needs small, repeatable habits that fit into real life. (We call them good gut choices)
Some of the best gut choices you can make daily that are great for your gut (and life) are being hydrated, chewing your food properly, movement after eating,
Oh deary me, this is one I really need to pay attention to. My gut tells me when I’m feelings tressed, long before I’m ready to admit it to myself. You can eat all the fibre in the world, but if you’re constantly in fight-or-flight, your gut will feel it. I’ve heard this from experts and from thousands of customers who say: “When my stress flares up, so does my gut.” This isn’t weakness. It’s biology.
What works brilliantly for one person can be utterly useless (or worse) for another. Books are helpful. Protocols can guide. But your body always gets the final say. If something makes you miserable, bloated, anxious, or obsessed – it’s probably not the answer. And while that can feel frustrating that your partner/friend/sibling can “do whatever they want and feel fine” - accepting your gut is different means you’re not setting yourself up for failure all of the time.
This one comes straight from you, our community. People feel embarrassed about bloating, bowel habits, urgency, noises, smells… all of it. The more shame people carry, the more isolated they feel – and isolation doesn’t help healing. Talking about guts openly isn’t gross. It’s freeing. I’m not suggesting to shout if from the roof tops, but a problem shared is a problem halved.
There’s no finish line where you’re suddenly “done” and never think about your gut again. Bodies change. Hormones change. Life happens. I’ve come to learn that the goal isn’t control – it’s understanding. Learning how your/my gut behaves, what it needs, and how to support it when it’s having a wobble.
If you take nothing else from this blog, take this:
You’re not broken. Your gut isn’t failing you. And you’re not behind.
You’re just human, with a digestive system doing its best.
And honestly? That’s more than enough.
