Why is Fibre Good for the Gut?

We're not getting enough fibre. OK, but more importantly, if you're reading this, it's likely YOU are not getting enough fibre. 

I bet you don't believe us, you probably think you are. But several studies show most adults aren't getting enough fibre. (The NHS, British Dietetic Association and Guts Charity are just a few sources)

If you're not digesting your food well and your body is giving you signals (for example bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, gas, wind, abdominal pain and cramps, feeling sluggish and tired, or diarrhoea) then it could be that you're simply not getting enough fibre! 

Why do we need fibre?

Dietary fibre mostly come from the plants we eat (veg, fruit, beans, legumes). We're not able to get all the great nutrients from fibre by ourselves - our gut microbes do for us.

There are over 1000 species of microbes and they specialise in breaking down the different fibres. And the more variety of fibres they get, the happier they are. So keep your gut happy by both eating more fibre, and more types. 

Diets low in fibre tend to increase inflammation and decrease good gut bacteria, while diets high in fibre reduce inflammation and increase good gut bacteria.

People who eat more natural fibres (from unprocessed foods) have a more diverse set of gut microbes and better health outcomes than people eating highly-processed foods. 

If you are trying to lose weight or combat diabetes, fibre is a must. Add these high-fibre foods into your diet: whole grains (like quinoa, brown rice, and oats), vegetables, nuts and seeds.

If you're not a huge fan of these, gradually add them back into your meals, a small amount at a time. Small changes build up over time.
